Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate. Their primary job is to make laws.

House of Representatives

The house has 435 members and is based on state population. For example, North Dakota has 1 representative, whereas, California has 53.

Each House member is elected for a term of two years, its suppose to make them accountable to the people.

To be member of the House of Representatives, a person must be at least 25 years old and be a citizen for 7 years.

The leader of the House is known as the Speaker of the House. The current Speaker is Nancy Pelosi.


Senate

The senate is made up of 100 members. This means each state gets two senators.

They are elected to a 6-year term, this is suppose to allow them to govern more.

To be a member of the Senate, a person must be at least 30 years old and be a citizen for 9 years.


Congress

There are many committees in the congress that are designed for specific functions. The congress is broken down into these committees to ensure that things get done.

The congress does other things besides making laws. The congress also does:
  • Educate the public on complex issues 
  • Resolve conflicts in our society
